You can find a wealth of DIY information out there about solar installation. I’ve considered having solar installed to run my well pump which is a large consumer of energy for me. For me trying to power various parts of my house like my well and perhaps my tankless water heater is more affordable than an entire system.
You do need some DIY ability to do this in my area as there is no one to call to work on your system, that is if you can find someone to come out and put one in.
Wind Energy Solutions
Wind energy is another popular option for homesteaders who are looking to go off the grid. Wind turbines generate electricity by harnessing the power of moving air, making them a great choice for rural areas with plenty of open space. Wind turbines can generate enough electricity to power an entire house, but be sure to check with your local zoning laws and regulations before installing any equipment.
I also checked into this but the wind speeds where I live(unless you count tornados!) is not high enough to make it viable. You can find wind speed maps online that give you this information.

Of course, this will only work if you have a source of running water near your home. Even then, I would think there might be ordinances about putting a generator in a river.

In my area, because the bedrock is close to the surface, you would have to drill verticle wells for the pipes needed to set up a geothermal system. Also, no one in my area does geothermal systems. One criticism from the off-grid folks is that you need power to run these systems which is true. But they can save so much on the overall power needed, it’s something I have looked into and would do if anyone was doing them in my area.
I don’t understand why geothermal is not talked about more. The system last longer than solar or wind and are not that much more expensive.
Wood Stoves
Wood stoves are another efficient source of renewable energy that many homesteaders may not consider. By burning wood instead of electric or gas-powered heating systems, you can reduce the amount of energy used and save on bills. While this option is more labor-intensive than others it can be a great way to heat your home while also providing a cozy atmosphere inside. Additionally, using a wood stove can be an aesthetically pleasing addition to any home. We chose a Buck stove. They are well built and attractive without breaking the bank.
I have a wood stove and it allows me to keep my heating bills way down in the winter. I wish they had something as inexpensive to deal with the need for cooling in the summer!
All I have for that, if the power goes out is a really cool creek I can go lay in if needed.
